The Main Causes of Impotence – and How to Avoid Them

Impotence, or Erectile Dysfunction, is one of the most common sexual problems to plague men. It is defined as a man’s failure to get or maintain an erection in order to perform sexual intercourse. It is also a man’s inability to ejaculate. Impotence can occur at any age, and most men would have experienced its debilitating effects at least once. It is, however, most often associated with ageing.

The causes of impotence are many, and can be divided into two types, psychological and physical, or they could be a combination of the two. Psychological causes of impotence are more prevalent in men under the age of 35. These include low self esteem, depression, guilt, boredom and stress. Physical causes of impotence are many and mostly occur in men over the age of 35. Primary among them are diseases such as diabetes, hypertension or multiple sclerosis. Sometimes drugs prescribed for other diseases may be responsible for impotence as a side effect. Very avoidable causes of impotence are cigarette smoking and prolonged use of alcohol or narcotics. Medical procedures such as surgery to the spinal cord, urinary bladder or the pelvic area can also be among the causes of impotence when they accidentally cause some damage.

Most men are reluctant to seek medical help when faced with erectile dysfunction. It is very important that they do so in case it is merely a symptom of another disease. It can also have a lasting negative effect on the man’s marriage and self esteem. The physical causes of impotence are the easiest to avoid, and one can do that by maintaining a healthy lifestyle with a balanced diet and plenty of exercise. One should avoid smoking, drinking or narcotics and try to reduce the stress in one’s life.

Avoiding the causes of impotence will not only brighten up a man’s sex life, but will also give him a healthier more fulfilled life.
